3 Underrated Tips for Solving Writer’s Block
Do you ever feel like you can’t write anything?
That no matter what you do, the words just don’t come to you? This is a common problem for writers, and it’s known as writer’s block. While there are many techniques that can help solve this issue, I wanted to share some underrated tips that have helped me get through some bouts of writer’s block.
- Time-based writing sessions. Write for 25 minutes, then take a break. Repeat. You may not be inspired at the start, but it will change over the period. The beauty of this is that the end is always in sight. Knowing this takes a lot of pressure off.
- Stream-of-Consciousness/Free Writing. Don’t worry about the finished product. There’s a lot of thinking that happens to make the finished product. Thinking is messy sometimes. Your free writing products should not be what you publish. We can’t all be like James Joyce. But it gets the creative juices flowing.
- Sitting down to write. Just writing. Motion is lotion. Sometimes all it takes it to move. You’ll warm up your motivation engine and soon enough, you’ve knocked out your writing goal for the session.
Over the last 100 plus days that I’ve published an essay, MOST days I wasn’t motivated to do it. I wasn’t motivated to write today. But showing up is always more important than what you produce, sometimes.
“…60% of the time, it works every time.”
