Big decisions are a part of life. Chances are, you’ve made good decisions and you’ve made bad decisions. Chances are, you’ll come across similar situations in the future.

What if you could make better decisions faster?

Alex Gutjhar (@heyalexgutjhar) recommends building a “Decision Log.”

Here are the steps.

1. Go about your life. But write about the big decisions you make from that point. If you’re like me, you’ll forget to do this. So write about the decisions you’ve made in the past. Start with the most recent big decisions because you’ll probably remember it better.

2. Note these details: Context in which the decision was made. Your emotional state surrounding the decision. Variables affecting the situation. Alternatives to the decision. Outcomes.

3. Reflect after some time. You usually can’t see the effects of the decision until much later. But this is an important step because you can now confirm what actions are worth your time. These actions positively affected the outcome. You can also discard actions you may have thought would improve the situation, but didn’t.

The bottom line: think about your thinking surrounding decisions. And then implement productive actions in the future. You’ll use your time more wisely and productively.
