Matt D’Avella’s 2-Day Rule and How it Can Help You Stay Sane As You Pursue Your Goals

I didn’t write an essay yesterday.

I blamed it on being too busy and stressed out.

That’s fine. These things happen.

But my usual response when I break a streak (of any kind) is to continue going down the path of inaction. Very unproductive behavior. It’s akin to rationalizing eating the entire bag of Oreo’s because you’ve eaten just one and broke your healthy eating streak.

Again, very unproductive behavior.

The “Two-Day Rule”- don’t let 2 consecutive days go by without acting toward your goals.

The underlying premise with this rule is that you must balance progress toward a goal on one hand with sanity on the other hand.

And, if you’re like me, your sanity is in short supply.

You’ll quickly find that if you try to go 0 to 60 on a goal (or anything for that matter), you’ll likely run out of steam very quickly and give up entirely. And that’s the last thing we want.

I take it as slow as I need to and ramp up when inspiration hits. Ebb and flow.

This could also very well be me just making excuses for missing a few days of publishing this round. So I’ll take comfort in knowing there is a rule that describes (and justifies) my lack of motivation on certain days.

The Two-Day Rule. Exercise it when you need to maintain your sanity.
