Rule 1: Stand up straight with your shoulders back

Jordan Peterson’s book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos was life-changing for many. Here are some tips on how to apply these rules.

Why is it important to stand up straight with your shoulders back?

An upright posture has more benefits than we’ve been led to believe. But there’s more. An upright posture translates into mental and psychological well-being.

Standing upright is also something you can control. You cannot control many of the things that life throws at you. You can control how you respond.

What happens if you don’t stand up straight with shoulders back?

Aside from the physical effects, not standing upright can be an overt manifestation of accepting defeat. Of not facing obstacles head on. As the Stoic saying goes, “the obstacle IS the way.” You can’t face an intimidating obstacle with a bad posture.

Action Items:

  • Dive in to the problem. I had a difficult time figuring out what to write about today. Constantly context-switching between different information feeds. I forced myself to dive into writing. Pick one thing and write about it. As you’re acting (writing), the problem usually works itself out.
  • Do the hardest thing first. Take action on the hardest task on your list. You may not accomplish it entirely if it’s anything worth pursuing. Progress on the hardest task gives you momentum for the other, less significant, tasks.
  • Stand up straight. You control this, to a large degree. This transfers over into other areas. And as you’re taking action, with a positive outlook, you will begin to see the self-imposed obstacles become smaller.
