Rule 2: Take Care of Yourself

Rule 2: Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping.

Simple rule, but simple doesn’t mean easy. I know I need to eat better. I know I need to exercise more. I know I need to sleep more. But why are the simple, yet necessary, things difficult to implement?

If this seems selfish, think about the more people you can help if you are well.

Action Items:

  • Start intermittent fasting. Fasting offers a bunch of health benefits. Start with something manageable like a 16:8 fast (16 hours fasting/8 hour feeding window). I’ve been doing this for about 10 years and have experienced great health benefits.
  • Walking. Walking offers health and psychological benefits. It’s the easiest and cheapest way to introduce exercise into your life. It’s also sustainable- something you can put in place for the rest of your life. I need to do more of this.
  • Reading/Writing/Learning. Give your brain a workout. Do mentally-demanding tasks. Like the previous tips, “use it or lose it” applies here. This is one way to do it, but there are many ways to keep the brain engaged.

There is nothing wrong with helping yourself. In fact, you must help yourself before you can help others.

I used to believe this was selfish, but that was naïvete on my part.
