Tech and Goal Setting: Don’t Overcomplicate Things

Technology is awesome. We are more productive today because of advances in tech. But are we better off?

Are we sacrificing convenience for other things? Today’s productivity apps allow us to do more. It is a powerful feeling to dump all my thoughts on a note-taking application and free up head space for higher level thinking. This convenience mistakenly tricks me into taking on more goals.

But this is a mistake. There are still only 24 hours in a day. Anything worth accomplishing is: 1.) not easy and 2.) worth doing well.

At this juncture, you must scale back your ambitions in goals. Focus this ambitious energy in quality rather than quantity. (This message is more for myself than anyone else…if it applies to you, great).

Quantitative goals are easier to measure than qualitative goals because you must think deeply about what constitutes as qualitative success. But it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it.

  1. Think deeply about what you want to achieve. In popular parlance, “find your why.” This is tough, but necessary. Still haven’t found mine. I blame the internet and its constant plea for my attention. Write it down.
  2. Forget FOMO and the Shiny New Objects. If you’ve thought deeply about your goals, you will inoculate yourself from these pernicious syndromes.
  3. After some time pursuing your goals, reflect. Write about how far you’ve come from the time you set these goals. How would you adjust your approach? Write everything down.

Technology is great. But there’s no free lunch. There is always a tradeoff. You are always trading something for the ease and convenience tech provides.
