The Price of Boredom: How the Internet has Killed Our Creativity
When was the last time you were truly bored?
Boredom was a part of everyday life before the internet. Boredom forced you to create your own adventure. It forced you to be creative. If you weren’t creative, you continued being bored.
Now, the internet has killed our boredom. We no longer have to be creative to pass the time. We can simply consume content that others have created.
This is not necessarily a bad thing. But it does have its costs.
Here are five reasons why boredom may not be so bad:
- Boredom allows us to daydream. When you give your mind space to daydream, you’ll allow it to come up with different ways of solving problems.
- Boredom gives us time to think creatively. You can think divergently. Stuck with a tough problem you can’t seem to solve? Try boredom. Be alone with your thoughts and the problem you intend to solve. Go for a walk without your phone once in a while.
- Boredom allows us to relax and recharge. Social media is the internet. It is the gateway through which most of us access the world. And we can’t help judge ourselves against everyone else we follow. This only adds unnecessary stress to our lives.
- Boredom can lead to new and interesting experiences. You may think of a problem that no one’s ever thought of. Then a solution to it.
- Boredom can help us appreciate the simple things in life. It provides the conditions that enable mindfulness and being present.
Try being bored more often. It can help you through some obstacles to your creativity.
