Three Quotes I’ve Used As Guiding Principles In My Life

Quotes strike a chord with us.

They’re usually succinct. We commit the good ones to memory. They offer comfort or inspiration in difficult times. Here are three quotes that I’ve found particularly helpful in guiding me through life’s ups and downs.

“The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure.” — Sven Goran Eriksson.

The great things in life come only at great cost. If it weren’t this way, everyone would be doing it. It wouldn’t be worthwhile if it were easily accessible to everyone. Don’t be afraid to fail. Give it your best shot. If you fail, it’s a learning opportunity. If you succeed, awesome.

“Simplicity is the key to brilliance.” — Bruce Lee.

This is key especially in an information-rich environment like the internet. Information pulls your attention in all directions that it’s impossible to focus. When you become overwhelmed, think about how you can simplify.

“Take time for all things: great haste makes great waste. “ — Benjamin Franklin.

This is related to number 2. Because streams of information come at us incessantly, we think we can do everything that is remotely interesting. This is flawed thinking. There is not enough time to do everything that fits this “remotely interesting” category. Choose wisely. Dig into your (few) interests deeply. It will be time well-spent.

These quotes have current utility for me. What are some of your favorite quotes?
