Writing About Writing. Another Form of Procrastination?

When I have nothing to write about, I write about writing.

It’s a way to procrastinate, but it’s also a way to learn and to reflect on my own writing process. I’ve found that writing about writing can help me get over writer’s block and be more productive. It’s also been a way for me to connect with other writers online.

Here are some things I have learned about writing about writing:

  1. It is the fail-safe subject. When writer’s block hits, I can always resort to this topic. We should all have that go-to subject when nothing seems to inspire us.
  2. It is a form of meta-learning. Reflecting on my writing process helps me refine my process. It can help with productivity. Thinking about writing and what I want to accomplish helps me focus when I sit down to write. It can be a way to connect with other writers. Sharing my writing process and struggles with other writers can be helpful and inspiring.
  3. It reinforces the most important part of a daily publishing practice- showing up and publishing. Even if I don’t have anything particularly insightful to say about writing, the act of writing about writing reminds me that it’s important to keep writing.

So, if you’re ever feeling stuck or like you can’t seem to find the words, try writing about writing. It’s worked for me every time, and I’m confident it can work for you too. Happy writing!
